Bombay High Court to ban bathing in Godavari during Kumbh Mela?

Mumbai(PTI):The Bombay high court has asked the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), state government and the Union government why bathing in the river Godavari during Kumbh Mela should not be banned.

The petitioners Rajesh Pandit and Nishikant Pagare had last week asked the HC to prohibit bathing during Kumbh Mela on the Ghats downstream from the sanitation treatment plants (STP) at Tapovan and Dasak. In the matter, the HC has asked the NMC, MPCB, state and central government to reply by May 6.

Petitioner Pandit stated that the water, when it was tested while filing the PIL, had biological oxygen demand (BOD) of 30 parts per million, which meant that it was polluted. "The ideal BOD should be below 5 ppm which makes the water fit for consumption, particularly drinking," Pandit told dna.

The high court had appointed National Environment Engineering Research Institute to study the pollution levels in the Godavari. The court had also asked the NMC to put up boards along the riverbanks, stating that the river water was unfit for consumption.
