British Indian columnist Hasan Suroor (65) was arrested on Monday, November 9 in London by the British Transport Police on charges relating to paedophilia.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police confirmed the arrest. “A 65-year old man has been charged with meeting a child following sexual grooming, and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, November 11,” he said. “Hasan Surour, of Sloane Avenue, Kensington and Chelsea, was arrested by British Transport Police officers at Deptford Bridge DLR station on Monday, 9 November.”

The arrest followed a sting operation by an anti-paedophile vigilante group called Unknown TV, in which a member posing as a 14-year old schoolgirl solicited Mr. Suroor on Facebook. Members of the group posing as policemen later confronted Mr. Suroor as he stood at the Deptford Railway Station, the alleged assignation point. They then took Mr. Suroor to the police station where he was taken into custody. The episode was filmed and put online.

Mr. Suroor, a British citizen, is a popular columnist who writes for a range of publications in India and the U.K.
