Varun Dhawan will most likely team up with his Dilwale co-star Kriti Sanon for his Main Tera Hero producer Ekta Kapoor's upcoming venture, Chetan Bhagat's Half Girlfriend adaptation.
A source confirms the development, adding, "Ekta has already bought the rights to Chetan's book and made up her mind about casting Varun in the film."
About Sanon's selection, our source says, "Ekta feels that Kriti is one of the most promising newcomers around and fits the character well. And while there is buzz that Alia Bhatt was approached for the role, all speculation went out of the window when she broke up with Varun. She has decided to cast Kriti Sanon instead."
But the entire development is rather kept hush-hush. "Neither Varun nor Ekta are willing to talk about it at the moment. Ekta has a flurry of films in hand which she wants to finish before moving ahead with Half Girlfriend. Varun, too, has Dilwale which releases this December," our source tells us.
Tanveer Bookwala, CCO, Balaji Motion Pictures, denied reports of the casting coup. "The film is still in its early scripting stage, is only halfway done and will take three more months to complete. As of now, we have not approached any star because the script is not ready. After that, we will think of who to cast," he told us over the phone.
But do they have Varun in mind? "Varun and Balaji have delivered a successful film in the past. So when we make films, we do think of him, Ranbir, Hrithik as potential contenders for any film. But we will only cast someone who we think will fit the role perfectly," he said.
What he could share was that the film would definitely go on floors next year. "For now, our slate is full with a number of releases this year. Half Girlfriend can only happen, say, sometime in June or July next year, only after scripting and casting," he explains.
